No need to hold your breath. I won’t leave you in suspense. The winner is yours truly, the old Roberooney himself. That’s right, I am the world’s foremost authority on breakfast tacos (to go along with the list of the best coffee shops in Austin). If you’re looking for the best breakfast tacos in Austin, look no further. This is the ultimate list.

Going Through the Motions

Austin Java (Various Locations): Turkey sausage? Come on, break out the pork, AJ. This is yet another example of run-of-the-mill tacos.

Not the Worst

Cherrywood Coffeehouse: Decent quality, but nothing special.

Tacodeli (Various Locations): So overrated. Not even close to the best tacos in Austin.

Basic Breakfast Tacos

Taqueria Los Arbolitos (Highway 290): This is your basic breakfast taco, nothing special. Good salsa.

Overrated

Torchy’s Tacos (Various Locations): I know for many people these are their favorites, but in my mind they’re overrated. Instead of putting the cheese in the egg mix, they shred it and leave it on top, which means it doesn’t always melt. They do have a good assortment of sauces though.

Minor Flaws

Kerbey Lane (Various Locations): Not bad, but runny salsa.

Just a Tick Below the Best

Counter Café: So close; very high quality. I’m not a big fan of chunk potatoes in my tacos, but Counter Cafe chops them up small so they mix in well.

Jim’s Restaurants (Various locations): I’m normally not a fan of potatoes in my tacos, but Jim’s uses shredded hash browns – outstanding! You wouldn’t expect it, but they’re one of the top breakfast taco places around.

The Best

El Primo (Outside Once Over Coffee): The best! The salsa roja is up there for the best salsa I’ve ever had. Be careful though: it has a kick! Grab your tacos and head inside Once Over for a latte.

I’ve tried a bunch more, but these are the main ones. Don’t get caught up in the Tacodeli and Torchy’s hype; El Primo is the place you want to go. What do you think? Have I missed any?
